So you want to work as a Scuba Diving Instructor?
You have this idyllic life, living in beautiful locations, diving ever day, sun tanned, healthy and living an Instagrammable life that most would kill for?
Right?
To the main of it, yes – however, life is still life and there are of course some pro’s and cons.
Lets look into not only the up’s, but the downs as well.
Cons
Missing family, loved ones and notable events
Unless you are fortunate enough to have grown up in a scuba diving paradise, the chances are that you will live and work abroad, I personally have lived overseas away from the UK now for 15 years and am completely used to it – but for some, it can be hard – people having children, getting married, illnesses, birthdays and everything in between can all be reasons that you wish you could just go home for a day. Or even something simple, like you have a hard day and yearn for some home cooking!
Visas
Unless you are applying to a country where Diving Instructor is on the Skills shortage list, then Visa’s are sometimes hard! You may have to do costly visa runs, go through long visa processes – it can be a nightmare
People leaving
The Scuba Instructor life “can” be a little transactional and why wouldn’t it be, with a whole world to explore?
But this can be hard, you’ve found your “people” you have good solid friends, maybe one who you consider your bestie – then bang, they decide to go work on the other side of the world – goodbyes are never easy, and it can leave you feeling a little lost.
Mosquitos
Enough said…
Island Fever
So you manage to get a job on a beautiful tropical island, it’s paradise and you can’t believe you get to call it home. Then after a few months, you feel yourself feeling a bit demotivated, a little anxious, Claustrophobic, Irritable and you feel like some people are dancing on your last nerve. You feel like you are saying hello to the same people, eating the same food and every day is a bit like ground hog day - Island fever is real and you have to schedule time away from your little paradise, in order to keep your sanity.
Pro’s
Diving
"Obviously"
You get to do something you love and get paid for it, no matter what level of customer you are taking to the water, you have the ability to be underwater and see some incredible marine life every day. Some days, you really do feel like you have to pinch yourself that this is your life
Relationships
While overseas, I have met some of the most incredible people, from all walks of life. People with differing backgrounds, cultures and opinions. I can honestly say, most of my closest friends are people I have met while working abroad. Often the people you meet, have the same mentality as you and you end up clicking straight away. You find yourself building a “sudo” family, you look out for and take care of each other and support each other in a way that is just beautiful.
Freedom
When you were younger, if someone had said “ you can go work anywhere in the world, that people generally go on holiday!” Would you believe them?
Its not luck, you have to put the hours, work and money in to become an Instructor, I hate it when someone says “ Oh you’re so lucky!” – Errrmm no I am not, I chose to do this and invested everything I had into it to make it happen!
But knowing I live on a tropical island in the middle of the Andaman Sea and can see the Ocean every day, fills me with gratitude – you can live and work in places as a Scuba Diving Instructor, that some can only dream of visiting one day.
Fulfilment
There’s something incredible about being a Diving Instructor, a teacher, an advocate for the ocean, an underwater tour guide, a mentor, the list goes on – I will have to Quote the PADI Instructor Manual here:
As a PADI Professional I have the opportunity to see:
• Fear changed to courage
• Faintheartedness converted into accomplishment
• Timidity transformed into confidence
• Anticipation turned into passion
As a PADI Professional I can:
• Open hearts and minds to the hidden beauty of nature’s creation and our obligation to protect it
• Foster self-esteem in another person
• Teach the value of character and integrity
• Transform another human being and change a life for the better and forever
“From what we get we make a living. From what we give we make a life.” – Winston Churchill
Like any job, you have good days and bad days – but a bad day as an Instructor, is still better than a good day at home.
