As people come into the PKT Dive Centre, we often get asked “Do you live here?”. I personally have lived on Phi Phi Island for nearly a year now and I LOVE IT.
When you move to an Island like Phi Phi, it can be like a dream come true, tropical waters, hot sunny weather, great food, amazing people and a real local community. However, life is life and there are still trials and tribulations, even though it’s Paradise.
One thing I LOVE about my job, is the people – both our instructors that work here and our Customers. We get people from all walks of life, differing backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities and personalities. A lot of customers that come to Dive with PKT, become part of our Dive Centre for the time they are here, whether its going out for Dinner with our Team or a few beers at the Dive Centre on an evening and I love this, especially people who are Solo Travellers (Like I have done a lot of in the past) – it’s amazing to see our team having fun with our customers, there are often a lot of teary goodbyes!
When I initially got into Diving, I was petrified of the Ocean – really really scared, I didn’t like the “unknown” and was petrified of meet a shark!! Now, we take people diving every day, some who are also scared, maybe trying our PADI Discover Scuba Program and when they surface after their first dive and are beaming because they have just discovered a new world – it really is the best feeling!
PADI Diving Instructors, train initially as an Open Water Scuba Instructor, then you can continue and do Speciality Training – so you can teach PADI Speciality courses like – Deep, Wreck, Nitrox, Drift etc etc. I LOVE teaching these courses, my favourite is the PADI Self Reliant Course, as you can really help people become more confident and safer in the water.
Living on Phi Phi Island is great, it can take a while to settle in – I personally have lived all over the world for the last 15 years and I know it takes patience and effort to feel like you “belong”. You have to make the effort, maybe go on that trip that you have been invited on, (even though you’re tired) and really immerse yourself with finding a group of allies/friends. It took me around 7 Months, to truly feel like I belong here. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
On my days off, quite often I will take a long tail boat with some of my friends and go for a tour, or just lay on the beach or by the pool and take it all in.
The local community here are incredible, they support us, look after us and genuinely care about the expat communities’ well-being. We all feel part of it.
As a PADI Dive Instructor, you have to wear different “hats” on a daily basis – Instructor, Medic, Psychologist, Emotional Support buddy, Teacher, Mentor and friend.
Being a PADI Diving Instructor, can be the most rewarding, challenging, tiring, exciting, thrilling, hair raising and emotionally charged Job in the World. But I for one wouldn’t want to do anything else.
I don’t dive every day, as manager of the Dive Centre I have things to do that are not in the Water to keep the Dive Centre ticking, however I can if I want to, and now, I can’t imagine a life where I don’t have the ability to be underwater every day if I choose to. There’s no going back.
Even if you never have the opportunity to see or feel the Ocean, it affects you and contributes to your everyday life, with your mood, every breath you take, every drink you have and every meal you eat. Every person on this planet is linked to the Ocean, which gives life to everything and here at PKT Diving, we want to conserve, protect and share this life changing experience with the world.
